The state historical and cultural reserve «Hetmat capital» in Baturyn

The state historical and cultural reserve «Hetmat capital» in Baturyn

Founded at the beginning of XVІІ century, Baturyn has played a significant role in history of Ukraine. It is the majestic and at the same time bloody page of the Ukrainian history. In 1669-1708 and 1750-1764. Baturyn was a hetman’s residence of left-bank Ukraine. With it connected the activity of such remarkable political leaders of Hetman times, as Demian Mnohohrishny, Ivan Samoilovych, Ivan Mazepa, Phyllyp Orlyk, Kyryl Rozumovsky.
The greatest blossoming Baturyn reached in days of the hetman Ivan Mazepa. During his reign here was founded Baturyn Cossack kurin, a higher educational institution at that time.
In 1708 Hetman capital became the center of struggle for renewal of full state independence (under the command of Mazepa). For suppression of Cossack’s free state Peter І has directed army led by Alexey Menshykov, who sieved Baturyn. It could last for a long time since in city there were 23 thousand army and large stocks of provisions and ammunition. And Russians, having found out from the betrayer about underground to the Fortress, came into Baturyn.
The town has burnt down completely. All people, even infants, cut out: victims were over 20 thousand people, and, only 5 thousand from them were military men, the others - town-dwellers. Churches and houses were robbed and burnt down, known book-depository of Mazepa, his richest collections of ancient thing and armors have been taken out to Peter's capital. After Baturyn the wave of terror has swept on all Ukraine. Mazepa adherents including their relatives were punished, exiled, its property was confiscated.
In 1750. Baturyn have been presented to Kyrylo Rozumosky in days of which city named "small Petersburg" these were years of blossoming. In the town the powerful brick yard, saw-mill, cloth manufacturing, works for production of sheet gold and silver, white wax, candle and soap factories, stud farm, ceramic workshop were operated...
Today Baturyn for us became a reference memorial of archeology of Cossack epoch, which cultural layer according to the degree of a saturation and informativity has no equal in Ukraine. The Baturyn complex of memorials has foreground value for formation of historical consciousness of Ukrainian people during development of the Ukrainian state.
In territory of the State historical and cultural reserve «Hetmat capital» there are 42 objects of the cultural inheritance, among which 6 are memorials of architecture for today (including 4 - National value), 24 - memorials of archeology and 12 - memorials of a local history.
Among its most valuable memorials are K.Rozumovsky palace, the house of General court (later - the house of general judge V.Kochubei) with park, Voskresenska church - K.Rozumovsky tomb, objects of Baturyn Mykolo-Krupytsky monastery, and also a complex memorials of archeology.
At the beginning of 2005 «Ukrrestoration» corporation started the first stage of the program of revival of Baturyn on which reconstruction of 4 basic objects of reserve is carried out: they are K.Rozumovsky palace, Kochubei building, Voskresenska church and Voskresenska school.
Restoration actions in Kochubey building were carried out and completed during 2005. Built up at the end of XVІІ – beginning of. XVІІІ centuries Kochubei one-storey building was brick with two-chambered basement. Ivan Mazepa came here to general judge Kochubey to ask for his daughter hand, loved Motrona, and received categorical refusal. The residues of the building are nowadays kept in a southern part of the existing construction, which was repeatedly reconstructed in XVІІІ-ХІХ centuries. The construction has lost initial roof covering and authentic stylistic attributes on facades, however presently it represents one of few samples of dwelling constructions of Cossack’s foremen at the end of XVІІ century. In particular the restorers were carried out internal finishing works; the oak floor was renewed, and the accomplishment of territory is realized.

K.Rozumovsky palace
Built in 1799-1803.
The beginning of restoration - 2005.
To order of K.Rozumovskogo last years of its life in Baturyn it was under construction the big palace-park complex. The main building of that palace constructed in style of a classicism and only one in Ukraine was kept till present days. From the beginning of XX century and especially during last years it is supposed the statement that brick hetman’s palace constructed in 60th of XVІІІ century by manager of K.Rozumovsky, H.Teplov, and reconstructed it in 1799-1803 under drawings of known architect C.Kameron.
The palace was built up from brick, chamber arches, columns, corbels are executed from blocks of the sandstone brought from Novgorod-Seversky. The main fa?ade, park with eight column Greco-lonic portico was built up to a level of the second floor. The rooms were decorated with modeled frames, a parquet. Unfortunately, the equipment of a palace was remained uncompleted. However, all in architecture and a volumetric - spatial composition of a palace testifies of the architect talent.
In 1824 the palace has burnt out during a fire after which a construction stayed without supervision for long time. For the first time a palace have tried to restore in 1911, then in 1953, 1973-1976, in 80-х and 90-х years of XX item, but for the different reasons any of restorations was not completed. By the beginning of carrying out of repair - restoration works in 2005 the construction of a palace was in a state of failure.
During 2005-2006 in a palace it has been strengthened the bases, replaced elements of a crowning corbel, arranged a copper roof covering, restored facades and columns partially. Decorative work in interiors, in the central stair enclosure, on entrance groups of the main and domestic facades still is carried out.
And today, like in past, over the Seym is proudly rises this pearl of architecture.

Voskresenska church
Built in 1803.
The beginning of restoration - 2005.
Voskresenska church, on retellings, has been constructed on site of the tower, so-called «Mazepa column». Obviously it was the residues of ancient Troitsky temple destroyed by army of Menshykov in 1708. Under K.Rozumovskogo's order the tower has been ostensibly disassembled, and its bricks it was used for construction of the Voskresenska church in which hetman have been buried. According to clergy data of XX century about Baturyn temples, during ХІХ century. The Voskresensky temple has played a significant role from the point of view of preservation of memory of generations because its territory was the graveyard of former Troitska, Staro-Mykolaivska and the Novo-Mykolaivska churches.
Built in 1803 in Empire style, the church had cupola and the Bell Tower. Facades decorated porticoes with triangular fronton. By today the forged door was kept of the beginning of ХІХ century.
In 2005 the corporation had been started here its restoration works, in particular, on replacement of a roof covering, manufacturing and installation of cupolas with tholobates for the Bell Tower and the temple.
In Voskresenska school at church in 2005 works on arrangement of a roof covering, parting walls, floorings, windows and doors have been executed. Also finishing work, accomplishment of the territory was carried out, facades were restored.
In Baturyn the Ukrainian history lives. This place is very important for Ukrainians as the national relic. Therefore «Ukrrestoration» corporation has a task not only to preserve Baturyn memorials, and to return to Ukrainian people one more of pages of its forgotten history.
